Pirelli make some changes to its front tyres
The lone tyre suppliers of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Pirelli recently revealed that they have changed the construction of their front tyres after their recent test session that took place at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Pirelli held the test session
mainly for the purpose of testing their wet tyre compound and since this test session took place in Abu Dhabi, they held the session during the night in order to test the tyres at night as well.
“We were asked to provide a slightly stronger front tyre, which is what we've done. In the process we maybe threw the rear out of balance, which is something that was noted during the test, but we've also improved that during the remaining tests that we've
done,” said Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery.
The test session was carried out using a Toyota TF109 which was driven by Pedro de la Rosa. Pedro was quite pleased with the compound and he believes that Pirelli will make Formula 1 more exciting and dramatic at the same time, in 2011.
Other than that, Paul Hembery wants to ensure that they produce a unique product which would give Formula 1 what it requires at the moment. According to him, they were asked to “beef up the front tyre, to give it a more precise input when the drivers turn
into corner”. Hembery believes that Pirelli have done exactly that and they've also finished the work on their rear tyres.
Most of the teams and drivers were also satisfied with the tyres when they got to test them at the post season test session that took place in Abu Dhabi, after the 2010 Formula 1 season came to an end.
Hembery also announced that Pirelli is going to hold a number of test sessions during the season as well, in order to manage and maintain their quality.
“We'll definitely be back in the Middle East again in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi at the end of the season. We couldn't get Silverstone, we're trying to go to Monza and probably Spa as well. So we are trying to carry on a parallel development programme,” Paul
stated.
