Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery expects tight fight in 2012 Spanish GP – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery has said that they expect a tight fight in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, which is to be held in Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, while he said that there is a possibility that a fifth different driver may win the race.
Hembery said that the tyre management has been one of the most critical factors in the season so far as almost all the contenders have been seen struggling with the optimal use of different Pirelli compounds. Moreover, he said that the races ahead will be
thrilling while he said that it is very hard to predict the results of Spanish GP.
“We've nominated the soft and hard tyre in order to highlight performance differences that will create a different challenge for the teams, showcasing both the speed and durability of our products,” Hembery said. “There is a whole step in between our two
nominations for the first time this year and this should allow the teams to come up with a number of different tyre strategies that could make a big difference to the final outcome.”
Furthermore, he said that the teams have been making the best of the efforts so as to improve the usage to tyres. He added that all the rivals have tested the new updates in their cars in the in-season test held at Mugello circuit during the last week and
all of them will be coming well prepared for the race.
He also said that they are expecting to see a close tussle amongst all the rivals in the next race in Barcelona.
“With teams having expanded their knowledge of our tyres at Mugello, we're expecting a closely-fought Spain - maybe even the fifth different winner in five races,” he said.
It will be important to mention that Pirelli have received quite critical remarks on the durability of their new generation of tyres this season by the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher of Mercedes AMG.
Nonetheless, the Italian tyre makers defended their stance and said that it seems like Schumacher has changed his mind now as he was very happy with the performance of the tyres during the pre-season testing this year.
