Pirelli plan to come up with higher degradation level compound in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport director, Paul Hembery has said that they are planning to come up with the tyre compound which will have higher degradation levels, in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
There were seven different winners in the opening seven grands prix and this unpredictable nature of this season can be much attributed to the new generation of Pirelli tyres.
The Italian company has faced immense criticism during the season over their new tyres which degrade too early. Moreover, Michael Schumacher even said that driving on this year’s Pirelli compound tyres is like moving on eggs.
Even though, almost all the teams faced immense difficulties during the start of the season, nevertheless, they successfully created a better understanding about the tyre compound towards the end. Additionally, mostly only one pit-stop strategy was followed during the last few races.
However, Hembery has said that they are working very hard to bring back higher level of tyre degradation in the next season.
“With the changes we’re making to compounds we’re trying to bring back some degradation levels, because quite frankly at the end of the season we were in negative degradation and maybe not where we were asked to be,” he said. “We were maybe repeating some races from the past where we were down to one pit-stop and I’m not going to say it was too easy, but teams were dominating the situation.”
“It was only a limited amount of driving and it was on a green track as well, but overall it pretty much matches what we saw in our own testing,” he added.
In addition, he said that they have to follow the instructions from FIA in their development process and will try their best to fulfil the requirements for the next year.
It will be interesting to mention that Pirelli’s contract is going to expire at the end of the coming season and Hembery has shown desire to extend their agreement for few more years.
Tyre management has played a crucial role in this year’s championship. Let’s see what Pirelli bring in the coming year and how all the contenders perform.
