Pirelli says hard compound tyres ready for testing at upcoming German Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Pirelli says it will test new hard compound tyres at the upcoming German Grand Prix.
Although there are no significant changes but the tyres are expected to provide added support to the drivers in the dry circuits.
Pirelli is a leading tyre manufacturing company which made its return to the sport 2011.
Paul Hembery, motorsports director of Pirelli said, “After a wet Silverstone, we hope to give the drivers the chance to run on the experimental hard compound tyre during free practice at Hockenheim.”
Hard compound tyres are more durable and it is expected that racers will benefit from the new tyres. Moreover, the new tyres are expected to be more stable during variable weather conditions. However, it depends on the teams whether they are interested in
testing the tyres during the upcoming practice session of the German Grand Prix or not.
Pirelli are currently using soft and medium tyres at German GP, but the Italian company is still interested in testing the new tyres.
Hembery further added, “The new hard tyre is not a big evolution, but it has a slightly wider working range, which should make it easier for the teams to get the tyres up to temperature and maintain them in the correct operating window.”
Hembery commented that the new tyres are actually made for the 2013 Formula 1 season because selection of tyres is an important factor in Formula 1 and they do not want the races to be biased.
As the new tyres are not significantly different, their main target is just to analyse the impact of the new tyres.
Pirelli currently has six choices of tyres available for the 2012 Formula 1 season, ranging from wet/intermediates to super soft. It chooses the tyres based on the nature of the circuits and according to weather conditions. It is compulsory for teams to
use prime and option compound tyres at least once during every race weekend.
However, in the practice sessions, the teams are given the opportunity to choose the tyres as they please.
