Pirelli says new hard compound tyres will be used in Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Italian tyre suppliers of Formula 1 Pirelli have confirmed that the set of new hard compounds will be used in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix taking place on May 22, 2011 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
The new hard tyres have been already tested by teams in Turkey earlier in May. However, the evolution of these hard compounds is going to be used in the upcoming race weekend.
At the start of the Formula 1 2011 season, it was announced by the President of Pirelli tyres that they will introduce latest evolutions of tyres during the season, which will definitely benefit the F1 drivers.
Pirelli’s director Paul Hembery said, “We said from the start of the year that we would introduce evolutions of the tyres if we believed that they would benefit the sport and Barcelona marks the first occasion that we have done this.”
Hembery discussed the tyres’ working and stated that the revised hard tyre compound is more hard wearing and long lasting, which have been used widely in previous races. He further added that this will surely trim down the tyres degradation and also improves
tyre wear at the Spanish circuit.
Pirelli said that the advancement of the new hard tyres is not a big step over the original ones, but in fact, there is a huge gap between the hard and soft tyres, which will definitely make the upcoming race more interesting in Barcelona. They believe that
this difference will push the teams to come up with even better strategies during the race.
Hembery added, “In Barcelona, based on the data we have seen in testing, we're probably expecting around three pitstops per car. It takes a lot longer to enter and leave the pits in Barcelona than it did in Turkey, and this is another factor that will have
a definite influence on strategy.”
Pirelli have predicted a three pit stop strategy for the upcoming Barcelona race.
After the recent Turkish Grand Prix, the Italian manufacturer was busy working on the hard compounds of tyres, since they believed that they can do more laps than the soft ones.
Pirelli is confident about its tyres, as they have given very positive results so far. In addition, there were no major problems with the tyres in the first four races of the season and all the drivers are happy with the role of Pirelli.
