Pirelli says two stops required with supersoft tyres in Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery has recently updated the media that the Monaco Grand Prix would require two pit stops.
The supersoft tyres will be introduced for the first time in the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season this weekend.
The performance of Pirelli has been quite impressive so far, as the fast degrading rubber has forced the teams to come up with not only a better performance on the track, but also in the pit lane.
For the Monaco GP however, Pirelli is expecting less degradation of tyres.
Hembery said, “If you go with a tyre that is too hard and it is not giving you an advantage from the compound you do get wheelspin and you get excessive consumption of the tyre and that probably for the public is hard to understand as the hard is going to
resist more, no matter what you do to it.”
He discussed the next race weekend and said that the Monte Carlo race will take place on a low-speed circuit which also has very tight corners. He is sure that the corners will provide a lot of wheel spin in race. Due to that, there is a possibility of more
than two stops over the race.
Hembery also mentioned that the drivers have to save tyres in the qualifying round of the race. He added, “The peak of performance is definitely one lap. It will have that characteristic of a qualifying tyre so you will want to put in your best lap straight
away and it will be a fast-wearing tyre. I have to wait and see what it does in Monaco as I don't want to make a prediction because we have never been there with it.”
On the other hand, the drivers had an issue with the hard tyre compounds used in the recently held Spanish Grand Prix. Most of the drivers switched early to soft tyres, as the hard rubber was not doing them any good.
The next race of the season will take place on May 29, 2011 in Monaco. It will be interesting to see how the supersoft rubber makes its racing debut at the upcoming race in Monte Carlo.
