Pirelli’s Paul Hembery says British Grand Prix going to be an important learning curve – Formula 1
Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery claims that the British Grand Prix which is expected to take place on July 10, 2011 is going to be a big learning curve for Pirelli.
He said the Blown Diffusers will be banned starting from the upcoming race as a result of which, the difference between each team’s respective pace is going to get narrower.
“You've got to bear in mind that at Silverstone there's a very significant change coming with the blown diffusers being taken away. So that's probably going to even things up for a lot of teams, and as long as they have the same opportunities then I think
they'll find a balance that works best for them,” Hembery told the media.
He added that this rule change will not degrade the performance of the tyres and in fact, it will only change the way the tyres are currently reacting.
“If you understand correctly the way it is working it really is about how it forces the car in to the ground through the corners, and clearly we are a major part of cornering ourselves with the contact patch, so if you're loading the tyres more heavily
then it's bound to have an effect on the way the tyres are being used,” he said.
At the recently held European Grand Prix, the lap time difference between the fastest team on the grid, Red Bull Racing and the slowest team on the grid, Hispania Racing Team was around 8 seconds which is a lot in Formula 1.
The officials of the sport decided to ban the Blown Diffusers since most of the teams started using this device for off-throttle hot blowing which is not allowed in the sport.
Because of this change, each team’s performance will be affected in some way and the cars will not behave the way they are currently behaving. Pirelli therefore, is trying its best to analyse the situation and probably try its best to maintain and enhance
the quality of the tyres that are currently being used in the sport.
