  1. In the city centre you definitely won't want/need a car.  The historic centre of Pisa is not large - you can see it on foot.  Italian cities, not least Pisa, are old, have narrow streets, traffic problems and a shortage of parking.  Oh, and Italians drive with little patience!

However, to see the surrounding area a car is the best option, as public transport can be complicated and limited.  And it's a lovely area - great idea to get out from the tourist haunts and explore the mountains/countryside/seaside.

I would speak to the hotel and see if they have free parking included (some have carparks but they are very expensive!).  That would solve your problem.  Alternatively, get accommodation outside Pisa, stay in a lovely country spot with a car and do daytrips to Pisa.  Would cost less too!

  2. The traffic situation in Rome is very aggressive. Motor bikes everywhere and they weave in and out of traffic as they wish, Be careful crossing the street in Rome!!! Pisa is not far, the train would be ideal, but it is an easy drive to Pisa. If you go to Pisa you HAVE to purchase a ticket and walk up to the top of the Tower. It is 15 Euros and takes about 5 minutes to get up there yet it is an experience to remember!!!

  3. You wouldn't want to drive around in Pisa -- there isn't that much to see there. However, exploring the surrounding area by car isn't a bad idea, there are some more interesting places like Lucca, Siena,  and Livorno.   Of course Florence too.
