On average, how far does a piston move down or up in a combustion cycle?

whatever the stroke is. probably 3-4" on the average car, but you can look in the haynes manual if you need somethin specific

Good answer.  that is referred to as the "stroke" and 3 to 4 inches is very typical for street cars.  For a battleship, you know, it'll be more.
