Question:

Pita Bread?

Anyone know how to make it? I have looked for it everywhere and can't find it anywhere! I've checked WalMart and my local grocery store where I live. Can it be made without a bread machine? Also, anyone have a vegan way to make bread without a bread machine. I know I'm asking a lot, just curious. Thanks!

    or  try this easy pita bread recipe:

    Cook Time: 10 minutes

    Ingredients:

        * 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

        * 1 tablespoon sugar

        * 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110 to 115°)

        * 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

        * 1/2 teaspoon salt

        * oil

    Preparation:

    Put yeast in 1/4 cup of the water; add sugar and let stand for 10 minutes. Sift 2 1/2 cups of flour and the salt into a warm bowl. Form a well in the center; pour in yeast mixture and remaining warm water. Begin to mix with hand, wooden spoon, or dough hook, adding remaining flour as needed. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 to 15 minutes, until smooth and no longer sticky.

    Oil a large bowl; place dough in bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and put in a warm place free of drafts for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Dough should be doubled in bulk. Knead for a few minutes then divide into balls about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Roll balls into circles on a lightly floured surface with floured rolling pin, or flatten into circles with hand. The circles should be about 1/4-inch thick and about 7 inches in diameter. Sandwich the circles between floured cloths and let rise for about 20 minutes in a warm place. Preheat oven to 475°. Sprinkle cookie sheets with flour or oil. Place loaves on baking sheets and bake 5 to 10 minutes. If baking sheets are oiled, turn pita loaves to brown both sides. Remove to wire racks to cool.

    Makes about 10 to 12 pita breads.

  3. Do you have a Trader Joe's? They have pita bread there. I also think Fresh and Easy has it, if your have one of those by you.

  4. that's odd you couldn't find it. a lot of stores carry it in/near the produce, deli and bakery section (there's usually right next to each other). every walmart i've been to carries it. they usually have it on a shelf in front of the deli meat case. try looking in those places of your store. if not your local co-op or natural food store will definitely have it.

    if you want to make it, it's actually really easy. i make it all the time.

    1 packet yeast

    1 1/4 cups warm water

    3 cups white or wheat flour

    1 tablespoon sugar

    2 tablespoons canola or olive oil

    Pour the packet of yeast in the warm water and stir until dissolved, roughly two minutes. Allow the yeast to activate, setting it aside for three to five minutes. Then, mix the flour and sugar together in a separate bowl.

    Alternate pouring the yeast mixture and oil into the flour mixture. Stir slowly until the dough forms.

    Place dough onto a flat, floured surface. Separate the dough into four to six separate pieces, depending upon how many pieces of pita bread and the size of the bread you prefer.

    Roll each piece of dough into a ball and allow it to sit out in the open, room-temperature air to rise slightly for 15 to 20 minutes. While dough is rising, preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

    Knead each piece of bread thoroughly and then roll out each piece into a flat, circular form.

    Put each piece of rolled dough onto a baking stone or sheet. Then bake the bread for five to seven minutes or until very lightly browned.

    Allow bread to slightly cool prior to serving

  5. It can be made from frozen pizza dough or from scratch with a basic bread dough.  

    You make it into 2"  pieces of dough and stretch it out until it is about 6" across.  You have to let it rest a few times until it stays at 6".

    Then cook it directly on a heavy skillet and flip it. Do not use oil.  Bake in the oven to finish it. When they blow up like a balloon they are close to done.

    I made it for 120 people once and it was not that hard.
