  1. Well, in a perfect world you wouldn't leave them alone together.

I personally don't feel comfortable answering this, to be completely honest. I'd like to think dog fighters aren't on yahoo answers looking on how to break up a fight, but in today's world...

Typically, when dogs fight its not like they are moving around a lot, generally, they'll lock a position and bite from there. Pulling can result in ripped/torn flesh, so you either need to risk life and limb by prying the jaws apart, or slipping something inside and across a dogs mouth to force him to let go.

NEVER allow two dogs alone together when there is a chance they'll fight.

I'm also sure I don't have to remind anyone that fighting dogs is a felony, and is punishable by up to 20 years in jail PER dog if found guilty. Along with fines of up to a five thousand + dollar fine PER dog.

  2. Use what is known as a "breaking stick"...Its a stick of hard wood, that you stick in the dogs mouth as far as you can. When the dog tries to bite he will bite the stick instead of the other dog. Then you will be able to separate them. Dont worry about the other dog biting you, as he is more focused on the fight, not you. I have heard of different ways, but with how focused pit bulls are when they are fighting, a breaking stick is the best bet.

  3. you need 2people,lift both dogs into air, or at least the hind legs off the ground.

if this does not help, you need water, or mace, pepper spray?

try to slowly pull the stronger dog off the other one.

i hope this works, if not, you are in trouble:hoist the stronger dog up by a leash or collar, belt, rope: let him turn blue, when he passes out,he will let go.

i don't own pits, but have experience with terriers.

  4. The same way the used to do it back in the day...either hold the dogs til they released or use a bite stick to pry jaws open.

Do not pull any dogs fighting, they will rip pieces off each other!

ADD: Patient paws..NEVER, EVER pull two dogs fighting apart, they will tear off whatever they are holding in their mouths!!

  5. Distract them, do not try to break up any dog fight by hand, because the dog can accidentally bite you. May I ask you why 2 pit bulls are fighting? Sounds a little fishy to me.....

  6. ak-47

  7. This is a very serious question. If it is because you are fighting the dogs, you are a sick individual. If you happen upon dogs fighting on the street, use extreme caution. These dogs are bred to fight and will not stop to tell the difference between you or another dog. It would be best to call the police and let them deal with the situation.

  8. Umm... Why is it that you are only asking about Pit Bulls? all dogs fight for a reason

  9. alone? or is someone else there??

loop a leash around one dogs waist, and secure to a door or something.

then calmly take the other dogs back legs, and swing the dog in a circle-while moving away from the other dog. use a break stick if you need to.

then promptly separate both dogs, in crates, and STOP letting them out together if they don't get along. crate and rotate.

  10. I have a dog that is super dog-aggressive.  I don't LET her fight other dogs, I do all that I can to seperate her entirely from other dogs besides the other one I own.  However, there have been incidents where she has come in contact with other dogs.  Here are a few ways to do so (Please tell me you are not fighting them on purpose..)

One is - cover their eyes.  In *most* cases, if the dogs can no longer see what is going on, they give up.  When dogs fight they go into a sort of "red zone" where they don't really know waht's going on, except that they have to fight.  This explains why in some cases, when the fights are over (maybe in your case) the dogs will act very scared and afraid... it's becuase they do not understand why they are being punished or yelled at, etc...  So, anyway, if you can cover their eyes, by throwing a towel on them or whatever you have handy, they will typically submit and come out of their "red zone".

Another option is, water.  Throw water on them.  It will sometimes, not always, bring them out of that red zone also.

A third option is the "cruelest" however, it will work...  If you can get in there and SAFELY get your hands around the more aggressive one's neck, try to cut off their airway for only a second or so.  This will basically just make the dog hold its breath for a second, and they will come out of that red zone.

The worst thing you can do to your dog is punish them for this after the fact.  When they are out of that red zone they have no idea waht even happened.  You can crate them, yell at them, God forbid hit them, but they really won't understand why, and that's pretty mean.  I was told by a trainer and behaviorist, as well as a vet, they all said just ignore the dog after it happens.  They will sense you are upset and they will feel punished, but it's less difficult on them than verbally or physically punishing them, since they don't understand what just happened.

In any case, I do hope you aren't fighting your dogs on purpose, and since u are asking how to break it up, I will assume you aren't intentionally doing so.  But, I hope you find something that works.  Good luck
