Pitbull rescues in CA?

We have had our Pit/mix for 7-8 years and he is the BEST dog ever! Very loving and kind...he's like a brother to me and my dad's bestfriend...well, recently my dog bit my dad's girlfriend...and he did it to protect my dad. She went to jump on my dad while the dog and him were cuddling on the bed sleeping and she startled him...He immediately knew what he did was wrong and whimpered in the corner...I took him to my apartment but now we are moving and don't allow big dogs. I gave him back to my dad and his girlfriend kept insisting that the dog would bite her kids...Turns out yesterday he bit the son in the face and he needed 15 stiches...The kid's story is that they were just watching t.v and he bent down to kiss the dog and he attacked...So now of course we need to do something, we absolutely do NOT want to put him down...I'm pregnant and the dog doesn't do well with small children so i can't keep him. Any places you know that would take a dog in for this situation....

DO NOT MAKE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT THE DOG BITING BECAUSE HE IS PART PIT..THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!! PITBULLS ARE VERY LOVING IN THE HANDS OF RIGHT OWNERS!

  1. Try this:

But you have a biter.  Be prepared for euthanasia as the only possible answer.  Sorry, but the first bite may have been an accident, or it may have been a precedent.  The second bite is a pattern.  Who knows how bad the third bite will be?  I wish you luck, but please don't dump a biting dog on someone unsuspecting.  Humane euthanasia may indeed be the best, most humane answer.

EDIT:  "Pitbulls are very loving in the hands of the right owner."  How, after 8 years, are you not this dog's 'right' owner?  The problem may be genetic, surfacing only now.  Please take my advice seriously.

  2. I hope the answers you get are kinder than the ones I got about my 5 yr old GSD. I think we know what we have to do... it is just so darn hard. I googled animal rescue and searched through the lists. It seems that most of the rescue places are in CA. ha-ha Good Luck and know someone knows how you feel.

  3. True, dogs are loving in the hands of good owners.

Sad for this dog, he's not in those hands.  The whole story reeks of lack of obedience and boundries for the dog.  Also get the feel that some of the humans you speak of, have NO clue how to properly interact with an animal.  It's domesticated yes...but it's still an animal.

Now, you've got a big problem.  To forfeit this animal to a rescue, you HAVE to tell them the dog has bitten people.  It is not fair, or right, to pawn a biting dog off on someone else.  If I adopted dogs from a shelter that I later found out had bitten a kid in the face, I'd be pretty pissed no one passed that knowledge on.  If you tell the shelter he bit people (particularly a kid) they may be forced to euthanize anyway.  Furthermore, at 8 years of age...his chances of being adopted are not as good as the younger ones.

First take the dog to the vet to rule out any medical causes for the bites (although I can just imagine what took place to make the dog lash out....more likely has to do with the people.)  Then you might want to speak with a behaviorist.  If this is something that can be worked on, perhaps the family can keep him.  You do need to realize that with some dogs, euthinization becomes a real possibility because you just can't change some things.  And honestly, after 8 years of loyalty to the family....I'd rather be with my dog while he was put down than to dump him at some shelter where he will be put to sleep without any of his family to comfort him in the last moments.

  4. There is a great rescue in CA, called Bad Rap- they even took many of Michael Vicks pitties. They do training before they adopt them out. If there's anyway you can keep him, take him to a trainer! Biting is NOT a trait of pit bulls, as they are normally very friendly!

  5. i've been looking to get another pit and would be glad to take him if he got along with my existing 2 dogs.  problem is i live in chicago.

  6. I would put him down.  His behavior is too unpredictable.  You never know who that dog is going to bite or kill next.

  7. My cousin was trying to find out why her mutt maltese "attacked" her 6year old son, turns out he was stabbinsafetywith a saftey pin and only admitted this ( he said he was doing acupunture, the kid is a riot) when they told him they were taking the dog to the vet to kill her. Kids lie. As far as pit rescues in CA, that I cannot help you with with anything else other then contact Cesar Milan.
