Question:

Pitcher filters vs faucet filters -- which is better?

Currently I'm using the Pur 2-stage filter for pitchers and I am very satisfied with the taste and quality of the water after filtering. I don't mind the price of the filters and it works well for me.

However, my boyfriend has a problem with how frequently the pitcher has to be refilled. He also doesn't refill it when he does drink water so I end up having to refill it before I can have any water when I get home from work. :P

I guess I'm just wondering if it'd be worth it to switch to a faucet-mounted filter. It seems more expensive, but I don't know how long the filter would last. I'd discourage use for anything besides drinking water, but we do drink a lot of water.

What do you guys think? Also, I'll be sticking with Pur regardless of how I go.

  1.   we use a Pitcher filters also, and bought several replacement filters all at once just in case the price jumped. but we remember to fill it up. so if you need work done or the faucets replaced for any reason you might have to buy a new one.

  2. We also use the Pur pitcher.

I think the faucet filter would be a tremendous waste. Pur filters are expensive and I cannot see wasting filtered water on washing dishes, and other uses of kitchen-faucet water.

  3. I have a Brita pitcher filter and it works well. My husband sounds like your boyfriend. So I make a 1 gallon jar from pitchers of filtered water (the iced tea kind with a spigot)

  4. Ok....let's compare apples to apples.

Faucet filters are generally smaller that pitcher filters. In this case a larger filter usually works better so pitcher will filter better.

As far as pitchers, I don't recommend PUR or Brita to anyone. They look cool, but it is a glorified water bottle. It uses a cheap charcoal filter with taste enhancing media. You will HAVE to replace filter every 2 months, or risk having a mold inside.

A Crystal Quest pitcher has much better filter (4 stages), and it is also a Consumer Digest Best buy for 2006 and 2007 (see link below). It also beats the pants out of PUR or Brita in cost of operation.

Have you considered a counter top, or under sink filter? Way better filtration than your current PUR, cartridges will last much longer, and you will have filtered water at a turn of a k**b just like for a faucet system

  5. i have a faucet filter and it is amazing. i defenitly recommend it.

Also the filtors dont need to be replaced for quite a long time, i think it is about 6-9 months they can each last

i also have a regular faucet that i use to do dishes and stuff like that

  6. I have done both systems and far prefer the faucet setup.  No pitcher to clean up and no real waiting for the water to flow through the filter. You can fill up multiple containers and put in fridge.  My filters last several months, depending on usage. (I also use the filtered water from the faucet to make my coffee.)  Hope this input helps.
