why do pitchers walk off the mound after an inning, when all the other players hustle off?

  1. Pitchers get to walk off mounds because first of all they are made fun of for not being "athletes," and coaches don't want them "getting hurt running back to the dugout" (again this is all just a joke with baseball players in general).

    Honestly, to answer your question, pitchers walk off the mound to keep that sense of calm. Pitching is a very intense mental activity. We have to remember how we got guys out the first time so we do not repeat any sequence of pitches too much. If we do, then we get hit and hit hard at the higher levels. So the walking thing is simply to maintain focus in our heads because when you run you get your heart rate up and can forget about what you were thinking about.

    Also, pitching is a very explosive activity and when we do not have to, we will not exute any more energy than necessary. It is how we keep ourselves fresh both in body and mind. I know this may sound a little far fetched but that is why we walk off mounds.
