Pitchers with the most wins in 2011 Major League Baseball season - Part-2
While the Atlanta Braves’ Jair Jurrjens leading the pitchers having his 12-3 record with 1.87 ERA followed by the New York Yankees’ CC Sabathia with 12-4 record due to 2.90 ERA, there are three more pitchers, who have been a constant source of problem for
the batters in the 2011 MLB season.
Two of these players have taken 11 wins while the other three have achieved ten wins in at least 16 starts. However, some of them lead the others due to their brilliant ERA or winning percentage of strike-outs.
Roy Halladay
The winner of the last year, the back-bone of the Philadelphia Phillies’ Roy Halladay is on the third spot with his 11 wins in this season with a 2.44 ERA. The reason Halladay leads the Detroit Tigers’ brilliant hurler Justin Verlander while he also has
11 wins as he has lost three games while Verlander has lost four games.
Making nine straight wins with an option for a tenth in his next start, the 34-year-old veteran ball thrower has allowed only 17 walks and 38 runs on 123 hits including eight home-runs over his 136 innings of 18 starts in 2011. Being the chart leader in
2010 however urges him to present something more to get his position back from Jair Jurrjens.
The experts, in contrast believe with a contest present this year it will not be easy for him to grab back his seat.
Justin Verlander
Due to one more loss than Halladay, the Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander is on the fourth position in this list. Despite being fourth in the winning list, Verlander has a better ERA, better WHIP and better strike-outs than Halladay. He has an 11-4 record
with 2.26 ERA on 143 innings of his 19 starts in this season.
He has given just 38 runs on 95 hits including 12 home-runs and 31 walks. Getting 138 strike-outs, the 28-year-old Verlander has achieved more than any other pitcher in this season. Verlander was about to take his fourth shut-out and ninth consecutive win
on July 5 but his one-run game against the Los Angeles Angels restricted him from getting this milestone. His win was to equal his shut-out wins with CC Sabathia and nine consecutive wins with Halladay.
No matter how close he is to Sabathia and Jurrjens, he is still needs to cross a long way to be the Number one pitcher of the 2011 MLB season.
Jered Weaver, Cole Hamels, Tommy Hanson
The Los Angeles Angels’ Jered Weaver, Philadelphia Phillies’ Cole Hamels and Atlanta Braves’ Tommy Hanson, all three are sharing the third spot in most wins list. All of these players have made 10 wins with four losses but they vary in number of games and
ERA.
Jered Weaver and Cole Hamels each have played 18 games but Hamels dominates with 115 strike-outs. Weaver has given 29 runs on 91 hits on 131 innings with 1.92 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while Hamels has given 33 runs on 96 hits over 124 innings with 2.40 ERA and
0.95 WHIP. Weaver is holding second place after Jair Jurrjens on the overall rankings of the players.
The third hurler, who is one of the most economical pitchers of the season, is the Braves’ Tommy Hanson. The 24-year-old relatively new pitcher has given just 30 runs on 66 hits on 96 innings of 16 starts with a 2.52 ERA.
Hanson has not lost a single game since June 1 and is now moving to take his seventh back-to-back win this season. Looking at his display, the experts believe he can be one of those pitchers who have made their early years memorable with their brilliant
performances.
