Pitching among the set of priorities for Chicago Cubs in Winter Meetings – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs have a set of priorities to sort out in the next week’s Winter Meetings. Tuesday was an eventful day as far as another contract was concerned as the Cubs signed pitcher Scott Feldman to a one-year deal, worth $6 million.
Feldman is second pitcher to be added to rotation this month. Earlier this month, the Cubs signed free agent Scott Baker. With Feldman becoming a new addition, the rotation is complete now: having the names of Jeff Samardzija, Travis Wood, Matt Garza, Scott Baker and Scott Feldman.
The Chicago Cubs general manager regards both the pitchers as good ones, capable of outperforming their contracts.
"I think they're both really good pitchers," Hoyer said of Baker and Feldman. "We feel both Baker and Feldman provide a lot of value in the free-agent market. Our approach is not going to change based on the previous years. You're always looking to find guys who can out-perform their contracts and guys who can really provide value -- and that's what we're looking for."
The Cubs are actually pursuing pitchers across the spectrum. Any time they see a palpable chance of acquiring or signing a pitcher, they will move considering the necessity of it. The Cubs are in building phase and want to make some quality investment.
After a season wherein the club saw 101 losses, the focus now is to avoid the repetition of it in the upcoming season. That will only be possible if a perfect defensive and offensive combination is finally achieved.
The offseason, therefore, might see some surprise deals as well. To be emphasised here is the fact that the Cubs will not limit their focus to pitchers alone. From a supposedly formidable offence to solid defence, efforts are underway to attain that combination.
Shawn Camp – who was the lone agent of the Cubs, and Dioner Navarro were among other players that Chicago signed. The Cubs are also weighing the possibility of signing Giancarlo Stanton (outfielder) and Starlin Castro (shortstop).
Thus, at this point in time, completing the roster remains a central focus of the Chicago Cubs in the offseason.
