Pitching remains Cincinnati Reds concern – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ general manager Walt Jocketty stated on Tuesday, December 6 that the team is looking for pitching so as to strengthen the roster. With the Winter Meetings underway in Dallas, the teams are tirelessly looking for the best possible player
out of a number of free-agents  to secure a contract.
But while the likes of Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder not to mention Jose Reyes and others of that ilk in sluggers continue to attract notice and intentness, what the Cincinnati Reds want for now is a strong pitching line-up.
Jocketty stated that he had a better sense of what the clubs were looking for. He was actually referring to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The GMs of all 30 teams of Major League Baseball are in Dallas for the Winter Meetings, and CBA is one of the
hot issues of this congregation.
With starting pitching the focus of the Cincinnati Reds, there is a search for closer as well.
"I got a better sense after that a lot of clubs are looking for the same thing we're looking for -- starting pitching. They have quite a few free agents. I've seen them, but I haven't talked to them," Jocketty said.
Edinson Volquez is reportedly to be sent to Colorado Rockies provided the trade deal between the Rockies and Reds bear any result. But that deal may generate scrutiny of observers considering the fact that Volquez could be used as closer for the Reds.
But Jocketty believes there are enough options for closers. When there are many of free-agents in this regard, the demands may drop.
With a lot in speculations about Volquez, whether he would be sent to the Rockies is something not clear at this point in time since the Reds were considering Volquez’s name as closer.
"We've talked about it, kicked it around," Jocketty said. "It could be an alternative. The other thing we have discussed is internal candidates. He could possibly be one."
The meeting at Dallas will have put everything in order once it comes to conclusion. But by that time, a lot of shopping from the free-agents list will have been done, including that of pitchers for the Reds.
