Pitching rotation looking solid ahead of 2013 season – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Detroit Tigers are the clear favourites to win the next year’s American League Central Division title. Owner Mike Ilitch’s willingness to spend cash on the players has gone to the point where the Tigers will spend any price
to win the 2013 World Series title.
Already, the Tigers have some of the best pitching talent in their starting rotation. In ace Justin Verlander, they have a starting pitcher capable of winning games single handedly for his teams. Verlander was the 2011 American League Most Valuable Player
and Cy Young Winner and he finished runner up to Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price in last year’s Cy Young voting.
“Porcello, who turns 24 on Dec. 27, had an up-and-down season in 2012 but is known to interest clubs attracted to his upside and to his knack for pitching heavy innings (173, on average, the past four seasons). Smyly pitched so impressively for them in 2012,
including in the playoffs” Tony Paul of Detroitnews.com said.
“Last night’s crazy uncertainty about Anibal Sanchez seems to be over. Jon Heyman just reported that the Cubs have pulled out of the bidding for Sanchez, which presumably means the Tigers are going to land him”, said Craig Calcaterra of nbcsports.com in
his post.
Doug Fister and Max Scherzer are the upcoming starts. Fister, in particular, improved his game play with each passing game last season to retain his spot on the Tigers big league roster. Rick Porcello is also growing in confidence with each passing big league
season and it will be interesting to see if he can continue the good work in 2013 to make a name for himself.
Youngster Drew Smyly has also shown significant improvement after making his Majors debut. On Friday, the Tigers also signed on Anibal Sanchez for a five year $80 million contract. Sanchez had an absolutely brilliant time on the mound last season. He posted
an incredible 1.77 ERA in three post season starts for the Tigers. With Sanchez in the pitching lineup, it is hard to see the Tigers not winning the World Series title in the next season.
