Can any body know or recommend a traditional Pittsburgh meal or food item?

I am traveling to Pittsburgh and want to try something traditional or a famous restaurant there with good food. What I am looking for is something like Philly Steak sandwich in Philadelphia or Greets in the South, or BBQ ribs in Alabama etc. etc. etc. you know what I mean?

What I am not looking for is "Hard Rock Cafe" or T.J. Friday's thing. You know what I mean. Thanks a bunch.

  1. You have to go to Primanti Bros!  They serve fries and coleslaw on the sandwiches and they are sooo good!  You should also get an Iron City beer to wash it down.

Pittsburgh is also the home of HEINZ ketchup.  If you're from here, the only ketchup you'll use is Heinz.

Also, I'm not sure, but I've heard that the whole concept of putting French fries on chicken/steak salads originates in Pittsburgh, but I'm not positive.

    Enjoy the city! GO STEELERS!

  2. Pittsburgh has basically 2 specialties. Perogies and Primanti Brother sandwiches. Primanti's is now a local chain. The original one is in the strip district very close to downtown. There are a lot of eating and drinking establishments there. Anyway, a Primanti sandwich is 2 slices of italian bread, meat of your choice, cole slaw and fries (right on the sandwich). Everyone thinks the one in the strip is still the best. We also have great fish sandwiches in the burgh. Try one at Wholeys, also in the strip district. By the way, the strip district is the section of the city where all of the fresh fish, produce, etc come in. There are chain Primanti's all around the city. You may also want to check out Quaker STeak and Lube. They won Best Wings USA. They have locations in Cranberry and Moon township. While you're hear, make sure you take a walk through Carson street on the southside. Lots of restaurants (primanti's included) in that area. If you like spanish food, Mallorca is incredible. Here is another burg thing. Grilled chicken and steak salads are very popular. But in the burgh they serve them with french fries on top. Believe it or not they're very good. Hope you have a good time in the burgh.
