Pittsburgh Penguins 20th Anniversary of 1991 Stanley Cup with Alumni a success
Not many does come by where teams can reunite over 20-years later and celebrate the success they had achieved so long ago. Pittsburgh Penguins were the lucky ones as their 1991 Stanley Cup winning team got together to celebrate the 20th anniversary
of their championship, which at the time looked to be so fresh.
"There's a lot of reminiscing and a lot of laughter. Even after 20 years, the personalities don't change. The guys that were the jokesters are still the jokesters", defenseman Larry Murphy said. It brings back a lot of memories".
It was truly an iconic scene as all the old players came together and met with each other after being separated for so long. The best part about the dinner and a golf outing that took place on Tuesday, in McMurray, Pennsylvania, was how former players shared
stories and discussed what had led up to that moment and what had been going on ever since then.
Some of the biggest names in hockey were on the team including superstar centre, Mario Lemieux, Mark Recchi, and Jaromir Jagr.
Defenseman Larry Murphy, a former fourth overall draft pick by Los Angeles Kings, contributed an amazing 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists) during their playoff run in all 23 games. Lemieux also appeared in all matchups and potted one of the National Hockey
League’s (NHL) highest scored in the playoffs, 44 points (16 goals, 28 assists).
Mark Recchi, who is the most recent to retire out of the bunch and winning a Stanley Cup this year, made this event even more special. It was his first postseason series in the NHL and played amazingly well by contributing 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists).
"We had a lot of depth and more skill than I think people realize", former forward, Bryan Trottier said. "It didn't seem to matter that went down, guys could sneak up a line or two and contribute offensively".
With over 40,000 fans waiting to celebrate their first Stanley Cup victory in city history, it was a historic moment which changed the outlook for sports in Pittsburgh forever.
