Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie Brent Johnson Aspiring to be Hockey Coach -NHL Special
This past National Hockey League (NHL) may not have gone the way veteran former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie, Brent Johnson, had hoped it would have, but the 35-year-old is still hopeful of remaining intact with the sport he loves, even if it means to coach.
It was astonishing for him not to have been re-signed by the Penguins after he became an unrestricted free agent following the end of his two-year, $1.2 million contract with the club, or any other team for that matter which could have picked him up. But
since there is a lockout going on, Johnson is aspiring to continue either playing or maybe take up a management position if offered.
"I'm going to stay ready," Johnson said after the Tuesday session of Pittsburgh’s informal workouts, according to Post-Gazette.com. "Just because my time's done here in Pittsburgh doesn't mean it's done everywhere.”
"I'll just continue to stay ready. Stay sharp, as much as possible."
A full coaching position might not be ready for him in the NHL just yet, and Johnson is well aware of that fact, which is why he is considering joining lower level hockey teams to eventually move his way up in the hierarchy.
"I've kind of been floating the idea of maybe doing a couple of hockey schools here in the area, specifically for goalies," he said. "If anyone from the team wanted to jump on board [and broaden the school's focus], that would be great, while we're all sitting
here waiting.”
Brent Johnson is a former 129th overall draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche back in round-five of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He has extensive experience in the North American major league, 12 seasons as a matter of fact, and has had many that
established his name to be one of the best.
Last season was not his best, and could be termed to be his worst in terms of stats with a career low of .883 save percentage and 3.11 goals-against average, but not letting him try out again would not be fair in any circumstance.
Throughout his career, Brent Johnson holds 309 games played, with 140 wins, .909 save percentage and 2.63 goals-against average, which certainly is not bad at all for any goalie or team to consider.
