Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2 – NHL Recap
The Atlanta Thrashers played host to the Pittsburgh Penguins in another one of Sunday’s games at the Philips Arena which the Penguins won 5-2 in the end. The game held no significance as the Penguins were already in the National Hockey League play-offs while
the Thrashers were out of contention.
The game started off with the both teams making shots on goal, as the Thrashers dominating the game in the department of offence and scored the lone goal of the period to get into the lead. The second period started off with the Penguins on top right from
the start and they managed to level the score. The Penguins managed to bag three more goals in the period and get ahead 4-1. The Thrashers scored a goal in the final period, but it was the Penguins who scored the final goal to win the game 5-2 in the end.
Ben Lovejoy was named the Star of the Game, as he came up with three assists during the course of the game.
The game began with a few shots on goal but it was the Thrashers who came across the early power-play and used it to the maximum, scoring in the fifth minute through Andrew Ladd to get into the lead. The goal was scored through a brilliant and well placed
flick-shot.
The period continued with both teams firing shots at the net, but they were unable to score any goals with the Penguins finishing the period on a high as they fired several shots on goal. The period ended with the Thrashers leading 1-0 as they made 12 shots
on goal during the period while the Penguins managed nine attempts.
The second period saw the Penguins coming across a power-play this time which saw them scoring in the seventh minute through Tyler Kennedy to level the score. The Penguins scored once again through Pascal Dupuis from a simple tip in shot to get into the
lead.
The Thrashers came up with a couple of shots on goal but it was the Penguins who scored once again through Michael Rupp. The Penguins sealed the dominating performance in the period with another goal in the 19th minute which was scored by Mark
Letestu.
The period ended with the Penguins leading 4-1 as they made eight shots on goal while the Thrashers made 11 attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw the Thrashers dominating the game and they scored in the 14th minute through Tim Stapleton. However, the Penguins wrapped up the game 5-2 with the final goal scored by Mike Comrie in the 19th minute.
