Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Florida Panthers 2-1 after shoot-out – NHL Recap
The first game of Sunday was played at the Consol Energy Centre as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 in a shoot-out. The Penguins needed the win as it mean that they would grab the National Hockey League play-off spot while the Panthers
were out of contention and wanted to win and play the spoilers.
The game started off with both teams coming up with decent shots on goal, but they were unable to find the back of the net and the period ended with the score level on 0-0. The second period saw both teams maintaining the offensive pressure and score a goal
apiece to keep the score on level terms. The final period did not see any goals, which took the game into over-time. There were no goals in over-time, but the Penguins won the game after the shoot-out. Marc-Andre Fleury, goal-keeper of the Penguins, was named
the Star of the Game, as he made 37 saves during the course of the match.
The Penguins with some quick and accurate passing managed to create chances for themselves at the start of the game. However, it was the Panthers who were able to get stronger with the passage of time.
The Panthers constructed some brilliant plays that saw them coming across scoring chances, but they were unable to score any goals. A goal could have come either team’s way, but this did not happen, as the period ended with the score level on 0-0. During
the course of the period, the Panthers made 11 shots on goal while the Penguins managed five attempts.
The second period started off with both teams stronger on the attacks and their play-making getting better with the passage of time. The Panthers silenced the home crowd with a brilliant goal in the 16th minute that put them in the lead.
The goal was scored by Ryan Carter from a well placed flick-shot. However, the Penguins were not far behind, as they successfully scored in the 18th minute through Ben Lovejoy to level the score. The period saw both teams making a few more shots
on goal, but no further goals were scored. The score was level on 1-1, as the period ended with the Panthers making 13 shots on goal while the Penguins made 8 attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw both teams making quite a few shots on goal, but none of them found the back of the net. During the period, the Panthers made 12 shots on goal while the Penguins managed 11 attempts, but the score was still level on 1-1.
The game went into over-time, but no goals were scored but it was the Penguins who won the game 2-1 after the shoot-out.
