Pittsburgh Penguins edge Washington 2-1 to keep Capitals winless under new coach -NHL Update
The transition from Bruce Boudreau to Dale Hunter has not brought the immediate effects Washington was hoping for as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Capitals, 2-1, giving them their fourth straight loss on Thursday night, December 1, 2011, at the sold
out Verizon Center in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
Washington was always dominating over the Pittsburgh Penguins in recent matchups, but due to their ongoing slump, the Capitals just have not been able to find their game in any way despite the change in coaches.
"We played too much in our own end," newly appointed Washington coach, Dale Hunter, said. "We have to get the puck out quicker, move it out quicker from our own end. I think it's very tiresome to the guys and by the time they get it out they have to change
it up."
Craig Adams scored the opening goal at the 5:21 mark of the initial period for his second of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season while Washington came back in the second period with Jason Chimera potting his 10th in the opening
two minutes.
Entering the third and final period of regulation, Washington and Pittsburgh stood tied, 1-1, but as Chris Kunitz potted his ninth with less than 18 minutes remaining, the Capitals failed to level the score despite having an ample amount of time to do so.
"You play to win," Pittsburgh Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby, said. "I had a few chances but they kept a pretty tight seal on things, and when teams do that, you have to capitalize. Unfortunately, I didn't. But we did a good job and played a good game."
Pittsburgh had a minor break in their two-game winning streak after the New York Rangers managed to edge them in their previous matchup on Tuesday, but made a comeback against a struggling Washington team.
The Penguins have one more on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes before returning home on Saturday while the Washington Capitals will certainly be looking to end their four-game slump against the Ottawa Senators, who they host on the same day.
