Pittsburgh Penguins finish off pre-season with a win over Detroit Red Wings
The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to finish off their pre-season with a win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night. The Penguins came out strong in the first period and were able to ride a hot Evgeni
Makin to a 5-3 victory.
The Penguins looked to have started their entire opening night roster minus Sidney Crosby on Sunday night. The club dressed notable starters such as Malkin, Mike Comrie and Chris Kunitz. In addition, the
club gave another start to prospect Eric Tangradi and possible fourth line centre Mark Letestu. In goal the Penguins gave the entire 60 minutes to Marc-Andre Fleury.
Similarly, the Red Wings went with a line-up, which is expected to be featured on opening night. The club included all their notable starters such as Dan Cleary, Brian Rafalski and Pavel Datsyuk. In net
the Wings gave the start to back-up goalie Chris Osgood.
The Penguins started the scoring just over four minutes into the first when Mike Comrie tipped in a Zybnek Michalek shot, giving Pittsburgh an early lead.
The Pens kept the pressure on and only three minutes later Kunitz was able to wrist one past Osgood, after receiving a pretty pass from Malkin.
The Red Wings were able to battle back with a goal from Datsyuk. Datsyuk was off balance, when he picked up a rebound off a shot from Henrik Zetterberg and snapped it past a helpless Fleury, to get his
club within one.
The Penguins added another goal 14 seconds before the period came to a close, off the stick of Comrie. Defenseman Alex Goligoski and Kunitz were able to draw the assists on the maker, giving Pittsburgh
a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period got off to a quick start, as the Penguins were able to get on the board at the four-minute mark, the goal coming from Goligoski.
The Red Wings were then forced to go on the penalty kill as Tomas Holmstrom received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a game misconduct near the end of the second period.
The Pens would add their fifth goal of the night only two minutes into the third period, after Malkin snapped one past Osgood, making the score 5-1.
Mike Modano would add one more for Detroit, however it was too little too late as Pittsburgh was able to cruise to victory in their final pre-season game of the year.
