Pittsburgh Penguins rally, comeback to takedown Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 -NHL Update
Toronto was in control of the match entering the final 20 minutes but their non-serious attitude hurt them once again as Pittsburgh Penguins rallied to comeback and takedown Maple Leafs, 3-2, Wednesday night, March 7, 2012, at the sold-out CONSOL Energy
Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Maple Leafs have now lost their second straight with just one win in the past nine contests, certainly not a good sign for a team trying to find their way back into the postseason race.
Coming back after a 2-0 deficit, Pittsburgh showed off come countering skills that ultimately gave them the match.
"That's not that common in the League to be able to come back like that; teams are usually pretty good at holding those leads," Pittsburgh defenseman, Matt Niskanen, said. "We just do a really good job of sticking with it, staying aggressive. We don't have
to change a whole lot when we're down. We just keep playing the same game. Guys are committed to making that strong push."
Fans might not have thought Toronto did a good job of keeping their lead, but newly acquired coach, Randy Carlyle, believes his group has a lot of potential.
"We showed signs of enthusiasm and stuck with our game plan," Carlyle said. "I thought our work ethic was stronger and but we ran out of bodies again tonight."
Phil Kessel inaugurated the scoring early in the second period for his 34th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season followed by another from Carl Gunnarsson, which turned out to be the last from the Toronto side.
Pascal Dupuis came out strong nearly midway through and fired it past Toronto goalie, Jonas Gustavsson, who faced 33 shots in total during the contest.
Dupuis was the man to go to in round three as well. He setup the levelling shot at 1:34 by assisting Jordan Staal and then got the game-winner for his 17th of the year at 4:10.
Pittsburgh Penguins are so far perfect at home and are very hot at the moment with seven straight wins. Facing Florida Panthers on Friday should not be an issue for them at all.
Toronto will be returning home to host Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, which will certainly not be giving the Maple Leafs an easy time.
