Pittsburgh Penguins rebound with huge 10-3 victory over Philadelphia Flyers -NHL Playoffs Update
Philadelphia had Pittsburgh just where they wanted them after winning three straight in the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Playoffs Quarterfinal series, on the verge of elimination, but Penguins rebounded for a huge 10-3 victory over Flyers,
Wednesday night, April 18, 2012, at the sold-out Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Playing without Arron Asham, who is on a four-game suspension, along with James Neal and Craig Adams on a one-game ban, Pittsburgh knew that they would have to devise a way to comeback and avoid an embarrassing upset.
It had been over 20 years since Philadelphia had a loss like this and Pittsburgh is happy that they were the ones to get the job done. Penguins are aiming to make history again by attempting to turn the series over and eventually eliminate them to break
Philadelphia’s record of never losing after taking a 2-0 lead.
"We've given ourselves a chance to get back to Pittsburgh," Pittsburgh’s superstar captain, Sidney Crosby, said. "And that's all we wanted out of this game."
Philadelphia’s goalies also had a disappointing night as Ilya Bryzgalov started the match but fell short on five on 18 while Sergei Bobrovsky came in as the replacement and met the same fate with the next 18 shots.
"At that point, Bryz needed to come out," Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "Generally speaking, we all need to be better at what we do. But he needed to come out of that situation. So, I changed it up, tried to shake the tree a little bit."
Claude Giroux scored his fifth goal of the series on a power play to kick it off in round-one followed by two straight from Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Matt Niskanen on a power play.
Kimmo Timonen and Jakub Voracek gave Philadelphia the lead yet again with two straight power play goals but Pittsburgh was right there to answer as Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal took a one point lead to end the period.
Kris Letang, Jordan Staal and Steve Sullivan added three consecutive added man goals while Pascal Dupuis and Staal added two more to widely dominate the second period.
Malkin fired off the last of the night 4:04 into the third to take the match well out of Philadelphia’s hands.
With the series heading back to Pittsburgh, it will be interesting to see whether Penguins continue to win or face elimination as game five is set to begin on Friday night, April 20th.
