Pittsburgh Penguins win 5-2 against the Detroit Red Wings
The 99th game of the NHL preseason took place at the Joe Louis Arena this past Sunday. The game took place in front of around 18,000 fans.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were up against the Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit Red Wings were looking to continue on the success road but it was not to be. The Pittsburgh Penguins, 2009 Stanley Cup champions outclassed the Detroit Red Wings 5-2.
1st period
The Detroit Red Wings were able to dominate the early stages of the period. The first 3 minutes of the period undoubtedly belonged to the Red Wings without any doubt but they couldn’t score a goal.
However, the home fans were heart broken when the away team, Pittsburgh Penguins scored in the 5th minute. The goal was scored by Pittsburgh centre Mike Comrie from 13 feet by an extravagant tip in. Despite the fact that the Pittsburgh Penguins
took the lead they didn’t stop piling up attacks and scored once again in the 8th minute through Chris Kunitz. The goal was a result of a splendid 35-foot wrist off.
The Detroit Red Wings came up with good chances of their own and was able to score in the 11th minute to cut down the lead to 2-1. The goal was scored by Pavel Datsyuk from a distance of 17 feet. The later part of the period didn’t see much happening
with both teams coming up with occasional goal attempts.
The Pittsburgh Penguin’s hard work and determination helped them to come up with a lot of attempts and they were able to score in the last minute of the period through Mike Comrie, who bagged his 2nd for the match.
At the end of the 1st period, the Detroit Red Wings were able to score once out of the 10 goal attempts and the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to score 3 times out of the 7 goal attempts.
2nd period
The 2nd period began on a slower side for both teams as they sat back and looked for open space. But this didn’t happen as both teams were able to form strong and non-porous defences.
With superb passing and determination, the Pittsburgh Penguins were able score their 4th of the match when number 3 jersey Alex Goligoski scored from a 57-feet slap off. With the score on 4-1 the Penguins were content with keeping the puck rather
than losing it.
Though from then onwards the Pittsburgh Penguins were looking to score more goals but didn’t want to overdo it so they were seen staying back in their half most of the time. On the contrary, the Detroit Red Wings were working hard in order to find a goal
but weren’t successful. They got past the defence occasionally but a wide shot or a keeper’s good stop ended the period with the score in 4-1.
The period ended with the Pittsburgh Penguins scoring once out of the 10 goal attempts whereas the Detroit Red Wings could manage only 6 goal attempts out of which none found the back of the net.
3rd period
The 3rd period was not as productive in terms of goals as both teams managed to score one goal each.
Both teams started the period on a high but the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to come with more chances out of the two. With constant bombardment of bullet shots at the opposing goal, the Penguins were able to score in the 3rd minute of the period.
The goal scored by Evengi Malkini from 21-feet put them in a comfortable position with the score on 5-1.
The Detroit Red Wings were able to respond back to this as they managed to score in the 4th minute and cut the deficit to 3 goals with the score on 5-2. The goal was scored by Mike Modano’s 13th minute backhand shot.
The rest of the period didn’t see much happening as both teams were defensively very strong. The match ended on the same score and the Pittsburgh Penguins won the match 5-2.
Mike is an extremely smart and intelligent offensive hockey player", Bylsma said of the 10-year veteran. He went on to say "And I just wanted to give him a chance to read off of Gino (Malkin)".
"We've got to play a lot better than we did tonight and we expect to do that", Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
