Pittsburgh Penguins wins 5-4 against Detroit Red Wings in a shootout after a goalless overtime
Pittsburgh Penguins won the first game of Monday, 5-4, after a shootout against Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena.
The game was important for both teams from the prospective of standings in the Conference. Though both the teams are almost in the playoffs, their position in the Conference would determine which team they play.
Penguins showed their productivity with a goal in the first period as it neared its end. Penguins scored right at the death of the first period once again to double their lead.
Penguins began the second period on a high note once again and scored two more goals before Red Wings got back together and scored one.
Red Wings continued with the dominating effort and scored thrice during the final period to level the scores on 4-4.
The game was finally decided in a shootout where Penguins won 5-4 in the end.
James Neal, winger of Penguins, was named the star of the game as he scored the only goal in shootout.
Red Wings were quick out of the blocks as they made a couple of shots on goal early on in the period. Penguins managed to come up with a few shots of their own. There were several chances for both teams to score goals but they weren’t able to capitalize
on them.
Penguins finally managed to score in the 16th minute through Pascal Dupuis’ brilliant backhand shot to get into the lead.
Both teams continued to attack and it was Penguins who scored once again in the final minute to double their lead.
The goal was scored by Chris Kunitz from a well placed flick shot. The period ended with no further goals and Penguins leading 2-0.
During the course of the period, Penguins made 8 shots on goal while Red Wings made 11 shots on goal.
The second period saw Penguins making a brilliant start which saw them scoring in the 11th minute through Dupuis once again.
A few minutes later Tyler Kennedy joined the party and scored another one for Penguins from a brilliant backhand shot.
Red Wings opened their account with a goal in the 18th minute by Henrik Zetterberg from a superb backhand shot. The period ended with Penguins leading 4-1.
During the period, Penguins made 8 shots on goal while Red Wings made 12 shots on goal.
The final was dominated by Red Wings and they scored in the second minute through Valtteri Filppulla’s well placed flick shot.
Danny Cleary cut Penguins lead to a single goal as he scored in the 9th minute from a simple tip-in shot.
Red Wings completed their comeback with another goal in the 11th minute during a power-play.
The goal was scored by Mike Modano from a well placed flick shot.
The period ended with the scores level on 4-4.
During the final period, Red Wings made 14 shots on goal while Penguins made five shots on goal.
The game went into overtime where there were no goals. However, James Neal’s lone goal in the shootout saw Penguins winning the game by 5-4 in the end.
