Pittsburgh Pirates’ Derrek Lee sent to 15-days disabled list – MLB News
The fractured bone in his left wrist prompted a 15-day disabled list for the Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Derrek Lee. The star player who was struggling since August 3 to play was finally sent for the disabled-list. Garret Jones is reported to be replacing
him in the first baseline.
This came in the aftermath of MRI, CT scan and two X-rays that were performed in the period of 10 days ever since he got a pitch on his left hand by Carlos Marmol of the Chicago Cubs, something that rendered him unable to swing his bat comfortably.
"The hard part is, it was so confusing to us along the way, with all the technology we had, we went through an X-Ray twice, an MRI and a CT scan to get the information we needed," Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle said.
The previously unanticipated, but feared, result came on Saturday. "We finally got the objective picture to match the subjective remarks of the player. He could feel something wasn't right."
While Derrek Lee had complained all this while of the injury and his inability to play, the X-Rays result proved the problem was serious which needed to be addressed immediately. But nonetheless, he had playing since August 3 despite the injury.
The problem became apparently clear on Friday when Derrek Lee was not particularly in shape to play against the Milwaukee Brewers. Important to note here is that he had recently joined the Pittsburgh Pirates after he was traded.
The Baltimore Orioles’ veteran Derrek Lee was traded to the Pirates on July 31 whereby he was expected to play his conventionally strong games. Lee came in the Pirates when the Orioles were performing below average, while the Pirates were somehow proving
their relevance.
The deal was slightly expected by him so when the news came out that he would be traded to the Pirates, he said, "I've kind of known it's been coming the last couple days, so it's not a shock or anything. It's just the business of baseball."
The Pirates stand 22nd in the Major League Baseball ranking while Baltimore Orioles reel behind in 29th. Lee’s performance therefore is important for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the injury that he has will make it somewhat difficult.
Having played 90 games in this season with 352 at-bats, Lee has scored 41 runs with a .247 average. Ever since he joined the Pirates, he has three RBIs and two home-runs to his credit which shows the importance of Lee to the Pirates.
It will be interesting to see how the Pittsburgh Pirates manage with Lee on the disabled list. Only time will tell the impact his absence will cost the Pirates.
