Pittsburgh Pirates: Regular season results – MLB August 2011 - Part 2
After suffering a series sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates were hoping to snap their ten match losing streak.
The National League Central team was sitting on a very decent position in the Wild Card standings with a 54-49 win-loss record. However, they lost the plot completely afterwards, which damaged their win-loss record to 54-59. Clint Hurdle and his men were
hoping to turn things around for them with solid performances in the month of August.
The Pirates got off a to a flying start in a three match series against San Francisco Giants as they secured a comprehensive 5-0 win in the opening game. It was an important win for the Pirates considering their poor run in the Majors for the last two weeks.
Clint Hurdle exhaled and enjoyed quiet moments after finishing up his press conference and post game duties.
The Pirates were victorious again. They played like champions as they defeated the defending World Series winners with a sell-out crowd chanting against them. Jose Veras and Charlie Morton had combined six hits and Ryan Ludwick earned a pair of RBI singles
as the Pirates hammered their rivals to restore some of their lost pride.
"All in all, it was one of the better games we've had the last couple weeks," Hurdle said. "It's a good start. It's all we could do tonight to go play a complete ballgame."
Pittsburgh was looking to achieve similar results in game two of the series as well but they fell short of their targets. Wasting too many opportunities, they let the opposition establish complete control over the contest. Chris Stewart hit his first home-run
of his Major League career and Aubrey Huff had one more solo shot as the San Francisco Giants battled back to level the series.
"All in all, it was one of the better games we've had the last couple weeks," Hurdle said. "It's a good start. It's all we could do tonight to go play a complete ballgame."
The Pirates, however, displayed some high quality baseball in the third and final game to secure their first series win in August.
"We'll find out after the Friday night game, but we're going in with some confidence," Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle said. "We were able to put a foot down and win a series on the road."
Winning two out of three games against the World Series Champions, Pittsburgh was looking in a very confident mood. Andrew McCutchen once again led the pack as he hit a two run homer and Jeff Karstens bounced back from his worst start of the season to help
the Pirates secure a deserving win.
