Pittsburgh Pirates: Regular season results for April - MLB 2011 - Part 2
After receiving a 1-7 hammering in the opening game, the Pittsburgh Pirates were looking to get back into the four match series against Colorado Rockies. Showing amazing fighting spirit and mental strength, the Pirates bounced back strongly in game two to
level the series at 1-1. Jose Tabata delivered his match winning performance to lift the Pirates to a sensational 4-3 win.
Pirates reliever, Chris Resop said, “It was a long night for all of us, and you definitely don't want to be the guy that messed up. You just have to do what you can do and keep going. We all did that tonight.”
However, despite having the momentum on their side, the Pirates were unable to play their A game and suffered a crucial 4-6 loss in game three to let the opposition team take a 2-1 lead in the series. The Rockies showed no signs of nerves in the fourth and
final game as well and clinched a thrilling 6-5 win to take the series 3-1.
Clint Hurdle and his men made too many unforced errors during the series and they let their rivals dictate terms. Unable to handle the pressure at crucial stages, they paid the heavy price for their lack of professionalism.
The Pirates continued their poor form in a three match series against Milwaukee Brewers, which damaged their win-loss record at 5-7. The hitters failed to post a single run on the board for the Pirates as they lost the opening encounter 0-6. It was an embarrassing
loss for Clint Hurdle’s side, considering the kind of depth they had in their batters line-up.
Not learning anything from their mistakes, the Pirates were outclassed in the third and final game as well and the Brewers secured a comfortable 2-0 series win.
Looking to get things back on track, the Pirates looked in supreme form in a four-match series against Cincinnati Reds. In the opening game, the Pirates came out victorious despite the rain and debris factors. Charlie Morton pitched an impressive five hitter
and the Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Pittsburgh Pirates’ team manager, Clint Hurdle said, “The only place I've been like that is in Candlestick Park. With that much debris on the field, the wind, the rain. I mean, the rain's all over the place. You don't know where it's coming from. I think
sometimes it was going back up. So it was challenging conditions to say the least.”
Although the Pirates lost the second game of the series, they came back strongly in the third game with a 7-6 win. Leading 2-1 in the series, the NL Central team produced another brilliant performance in the fourth and final game to improve their win-loss
record to 8-8.
