Pittsburgh Pirates beat Colorado Rockies 6-2 to level series – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates bounce back strongly to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 at Coors Field in Colorado on Tuesday, July 17 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Clint Hurdle and his men, who were beaten by the Rockies in series’ opener, executed their game plan to perfection on Tuesday evening to keep the series alive. It will be great to see if the Pirates can beat the Rockies in the final game to have any chance
of replacing Cincinnati Reds at the top of National League Central standings.
Andrew McCutchen provided the Pirates with an excellent start as he homered to left in the fourth inning to level the score 1-1. The centre-fielder is having his career best season and he hit his 22nd home-run on Monday evening to play a key role
in deciding the outcome of the clash.
His batting average of .374 is also considerably higher than his career average of .293. It will not be a surprise to anyone if the talented hitter signs on a better and bigger contract next season.
"It's a mile marker along the way," Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle said. "There's a bunch of people in there who planned on getting there earlier than we did. We played well tonight, but we haven't found our rhythm on the road yet. But we're working hard.
We're playing hard, and I'm very optimistic we're going to get there."
"Every win from here on out is going to be huge, but for us to have him come out and throw the ball the way he did is just as big," Pirates’ short-stop Clint Barmes said.
Alex Presley had an RBI ground out to second and Drew Sutton drove in a couple of runs in the fifth inning to make the score 4-2 in the Pirates’ favour. Casey McGehee and Michael McKenry also made useful contributions with the bat.
Starting pitcher Erik Bedard finally managed to live up to his immense potential as he gave up just two runs and eight hits in six plus innings for his fifth win of the season.
