Pittsburgh Pirates defeat Boston Red Sox 6-4 – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates continued their winnings streak beating the Boston Red Sox 6-4 at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on Saturday, June 25.
The Red Sox that had earlier got their form back after starting the season poorly, failed to live up to their fans’ expectations once again.
"We can win four just like we lost four, so we're not going to get too up or too down," Pedroia said. "We started the season 2-10 and we've been kicking (butt) ever since, so I don't think anybody's going to go home and jump out of their hotel room because
we lost four in a row."
Jeff Karstens did not apparently have a good start for the Pirates as Adrian Gonzalez managed to score a single in the very first inning. Tim Wakefield pitched a shut-out inning to maintain the Red Sox lead.
Gonzalez hit a homer in the third inning to double the Red Sox lead as the Pirates opened their account for what seemed tremendously menacing for a now struggling Red Sox defence.
The Pirates’ Lyle Overbay masterfully executed a hit, earning no less than a three-run homer to reverse the lead in the Pirates favour. "It's almost like slow-pitch softball," Hurdle said. "It's a real relaxed mentality, let him deliver the ball and then
try to hit it where you think it's going to end up.”
Karstens followed with a single to take the lead to 4-2, throwing the Red Sox into jitters. Andrew McCutchen came up with a hit and scored on an error by Dustin Pedroia, increasing the lead to 5-2 for Pittsburgh. The error by Pedroia cost the Red Sox dearly,
as the gap got larger and increased pressure on the Red Sox.
While Karstens pitched scoreless innings, the seventh proved productive for the Red Sox with the individual singles by Josh Reddick and Jacoby Ellsbury, taking Boston’s score up to four. However, Pirates’ Garret Jones hit a homer to maintain the upper hand
with a 6-4 lead.
Tim Wood and Joel Hanrahan subsequently pitched eighth and ninth shut-out innings to win the Pirates their second victory in a row after they won the game 3-1 on Friday. It will be interesting to see how the Pirates carry their winning momentum into the
next game of this match-up. The Red Sox will be looking to double their efforts to avoid a sweep and take a much needed win against the Pirates.
In the 6-4 victory of the Pirates, the offence had seven hits which included six RBIs while the Red Sox had more hits which totaled 9, but fewer number of RBIs which stood at four. Boston’s offence will be looking to improve their performance against the
Pirates in the coming game.
