Pittsburgh Pirates defeat Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 – MLB Update
Aaron Thompson put in a brilliant performance on Wednesday, August 24 as he helped the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 at PNC Park.
Pitching over four innings, the Pirates precocious talent pounded the Brewers’ offence with remarkable efficacy to take the victory.
"I was a little nervous but it wasn't too bad," Thompson said. "I got here (Tuesday) so I had a chance to get used to the clubhouse and the ballpark. I was around most of the guys in spring training and they reached out and made me feel welcome. So the nerves
weren't as bad as they might have been."
Considering the fact that the Brewers were always supplied with the best hitters around, Aaron Thompson’s performance was, beyond any shadow of doubt, par excellence. That was something that everyone at the ball-park acknowledged.
"Poise is the word I kept using over and over in the dugout to describe Aaron," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "He had a slow heartbeat. He looked polished out there, like he had done it a number of times.”
But nonetheless, the Milwaukee Brewers do not change any palpable challenge for now as they have lost only five of their last 29 games. Add to it the fact that they are the leading team of National League Central, putting them in a rather comfortable position.
With the win that the Pittsburgh Pirates notched, the four-game series came to an end as both the teams won two games each.
Wednesday’s encounter began with Aaron Thompson pitching the first inning. Giving up only a hit, the rookie tossed some good pitches to conclude the inning scoreless for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Shaun Marcum was enlisted as the Milwaukee Brewers’ starter for the game whose first inning did not turn out to be good enough. It was Andrew McCutchen who hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run for the Pirates, giving them a 1-0 lead by the end of the
first.
Thompson, setting his credentials as the latest talent of the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitched a shut-out inning all the while to maintain the lead which apparently seemed insufficient.
Neil Walker went for another sacrifice fly hit in the fourth inning to double the lead for the Pirates while the Brewers’ hitters bore the brunt of Aaron Thompson’s pitches coupled with that of Jason Grilli who also pitched wonderfully only to be followed
by Jose Veras’ solid eighth inning.
Joe Hanrahan was brought in as a closer. Like the starter and relievers, Hanrahan tossed the ninth inning as a shut-out to wrap up the game with a fascinating 2-0 win for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
