Pittsburgh Pirates defeated by Atlanta Braves 2-7 – MLB news
Pittsburgh Pirates defeated by the Atlanta Braves 2-7 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Monday, June 3 at the Turner Field in Atlanta.
Unlike previous clash with the Cincinnati Reds, in which they played under pressure throughout the series, the Pirates started well on Monday night and took early lead in the bottom third inning.
“I was frustrated and I got up and that's it, That's all that happened. That's exactly what happened. And he threw me out for that,” Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin.
However, their pitchers did not play well and allowed too many runs. A.J. Burnett pitched five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. He also allowed three homers on 3.22 ERA and literally proved one of the losing factors for the Pirates.
Former Arizona Diamondbacks’ reliever Mike Zagurski also could not stop the Braves’ persistent hard hitting. He allowed one run along with one earned run on blistering high ERA of 13.50.
On the other hand, the Braves entire roster showed great commitment and won with style. They played aggressively and kept the Pirates under pressure throughout the game and eventually won with ease.
Kris Medlen pitched seven innings and allowed only one run on seven hits. He struck out six and remained consistent on his 3.14 ERA.
“It's been a while, yeah, I always try to keep our team in the game. However many runs we're scoring or however many runs I'm giving up, I always try to keep it as close as I can. With our offense, we're an explosive-style offense as you saw today. Keep
them close and we can win a game with a two- or three-run home run,” Medlen said.
Closing pitcher Alex Wood also did well on the mound as he pitched two innings and allowed only one run on two hits. He struck out three while his ERA also remained consistent on 3.00.
Along with pitchers, the Braves talented hitters also played their role in their team’s win. Jason Heyward scored one run on his five at bats. He also ran for two RBIs and maintained his slugging percentage of .270.
