Pittsburgh Pirates edge past Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 – MLB Recap
Pittsburgh Pirates edge past Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 in the fourth and final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Thursday, April 25 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
“You don't try to explain it, We just play the game, one at a time. I really like our focus and intensity. Everybody knows their role. Even if they don't start, they stay prepared and ready to go, I think it's the way we stayed after it against a real good
pitcher,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.
Pirates played exceptionally well and showed great resilience throughout the game. Their upfront batters and pitchers played exceptionally well and did not give any chance to the Phillies to bounce back in the game.
This was also third straight win for the Pirates as they won the series 3-1. The Phillies were only able to win first game of the series while in rest of the three games; they watched Pirates’ utter domination.
"We're just not playing good baseball right now, We're in a bad term, or whatever you want to call it. We're trying and we have a lot of life, but we're not getting it done. We're in a period where we're not playing good at all," Phillies manager Charlie
Manuel.
In Thursday’s game as well, the Pirates showed their best plays and won with style. Starter James McDonald pitched five innings and allowed three runs and five hits. He struck out four and maintained his 4.38 ERA.
Closer Tony Watson also showed great determination and allowed only one run and two hits. He also allowed only one earned run and maintained his ERA at 3.00.
Along with batters, the Pirates hitters also played a key role in their team’s win. They all played well and hammered the Phillies pitchers hard. Startling Marte scored two runs on two hits. He maintained his slugging percentage at .494 and proved one of
the winning factors for the Pirates.
First baseman Gaby Sanchez also played very well as he scored one run and ran for three RBIs. He hit hard and kept under pressure all the Phillies pitchers.
