Pittsburgh Pirates edge past Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 – MLB news
Pittsburgh Pirates edge past Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 in the second game of their three-match regular series encounter on Wednesday, July 3 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates played wonderfully throughout the game and won with style. Their batters and pitchers showed responsibility and helped their team win an important second game of the series.
“They're going to get their hits -- and I'm also going to make my pitches, I'm going to win some battles; they're going to win some battles. A night like tonight they're finding some holes hitting the ball pretty hard at points, you've just got to try to
stay consistent and don't teeter away from what you do well,” Pirates’ starting pitcher Locke said after the game.
Pirates’ upfront batters scored in quick successions while their pitchers defended their team’s lead throughout the game and won with quite ease.
Centre fielder Andrew McCutchen scored two runs on three hits on his three at bats while he also maintained his slugging percentage at .472.
First baseman Gaby Sanchez also played well and scored two runs on a single hit. He hit hard on his three at bats while he managed to sustain his slugging percentage at .427.
Catcher Russell Martin also did a good job on the plate as he scored one run on two hits as he also ran for two RBIs on his four at bats. He played really well and hit with a slugging percentage of .420.
Not only batters, the Pirates pitchers also performed tremendously and played a key role in their team’s tremendous win. They pitched in right areas and kept the Phillies’ top batting lineup under pressure throughout the game.
“I'll tell you what -- there's something special going on here, All the guys pull for each other every night. We're not out of game, ever. And I think the Pirates of the past could get out of a game early,” starter Locke said.
Starting pitcher Jeff Locke pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only three runs on seven hits. He struck out two Phillies’ hitters on his consistent 2.12 ERA.
