Pittsburgh Pirates grab 5-1 win against Atlanta Braves in Game 2 – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates grabbed a superb 5-1 win against the Atlanta Braves at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 2 in second game of their three match series.
Manager Clint Hurdle will be very pleased with what he has seen from the Pirates in first two games of the series. Surely, the skipper will be expecting his men to continue their good work in the finale to earn a rare series sweep against the Atlanta Braves.
Pirates held their nerves to clinch a narrow 2-1 win in series opener. With momentum on their side, Hurdle and company put up a dominant show in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead against their National League rivals.
Starting pitcher Kevin Correia had an excellent time on the mound as he gave up just six hits and one run in six plus innings to claim 12th win of the season. Striking-out batters at regular intervals, Correia used his fastballs efficiently against
the Braves’ batting line-up.
"It's huge," Correia said. "It seems like when you go into the offseason on a bad one you can't stop thinking about that for weeks and weeks until so it's nice to have a good one to kind of go in on a positive note just to rest your mind a little bit."
"It's always fun to watch a young man gain some confidence in this game," Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle said of Starling Marte. "We're just trying to make sure he keeps it simple because of what he's capable of. We just want him to try to slow the game down."
Relief pitchers Justin Wilson, Chris Resop and Brayan Morris combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings to help Pirates hold on to their four run lead.
Braves’ starter Tommy Hanson had an off day as he allowed nine hits and five runs in six innings to suffer his 10th loss of the year.
Andrew McCutchen earned an RBI ground out in the first inning to put Pirates on the board. Clint Barmes, Alex Presley and Garrett Jones also made valuable contributions to help Pittsburgh score five runs.
