Pittsburgh Pirates hammer Houston Astros 3-2 – MLB Recap
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Astros 3-2 in the final game of their three-match regular series encounter on Sunday, May 13, at PNC Park, Pittsburgh in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Shortstop Josh Harrison played well for the Pirates and won the game for his team. He made single to left in the bottom ninth on which pinch hitter Clint Barmes scored a run and gave the Pirates a deserted win on a rainy outing.
With this win the Pirates have also won the series with 2-1.
“Pitchers really aren't going to fool around in that situation. They're going to try to attack the zone. Anytime you've got the winning run in scoring position, if you've got a pitch to hit, you don't want to let it go." said Harrison.
Later Barmes said, "It's a lot of fun to score that kind of run."
On his team’s win, the Pirates manager Clint Hurdle also commented in the media, "My mentality has always been to win the game in nine innings -- after that, all bets were off. We were trying out first baseman. One of them actually played there before, too.
It was a good team win. Everybody threw something in; everybody needed to do something."
The Pittsburgh closer Tony Watson proved enormously productive in the end with his intelligent pitching in 12th and remained hitless against the Astros Jason Grilli, Joel Hanrahan and Juan Cruz.
The Astros had a perfect chance with their experienced batters facing a relatively inexperienced pitcher like Watson who at that particular time was also carrying the huge hopes and pressure of his team’s win and lose chances.
However, not only he rose to the occasion and went hard against the Astros batters, but he also won the game for the Pirates in style.
The Pirates starter A.J. Burnett however, went with six hits along with two total runs and two earned runs in his eight innings.
In the meanwhile, currently the Pirates are sitting comfortable at third position in the National League Central, but if they able to defeat the Miami Marlins in their upcoming series, they have a fair chance to close the gap to Cincinnati Reds in the same
division.
