Pittsburgh Pirates hammered by New York Mets 2-6 – MLB Recap
Pittsburgh Pirates were hammered by the New York Mets 2-6 in first game of their four-match regular series encounter on Monday, September 24 at Citi Field in New York.
"Unfortunately, the way we're going right now, this one backfired on us as well," Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle said.
Mets’ first baseman Ike Davis played well and showed his class on the plate. He scored two runs and smashed two hits on his four at-bats while he ran for five RBIs which proved one of the winning factors for the Mets.
"It's definitely made myself feel a little better about the season, My teammates were a huge part of that, too, It was really cool. It worked out the way it should've worked out, The difference is, I'm just not awful, The first 2 1/2 months I was terrible. I felt like I never had played baseball before," Davis said.
Right fielder Fred Lewis scored one run and smashed one hit on his four at-bats as he also remained consistent with .176.
Third baseman David Wright also did well on the plate as he batted three times and scored two runs and smashed one hit along with an RBI. He showed his class and maintained his .487 slugging percentage.
Along with batters, the Mets' pitchers also played well and literally outclassed the Pirates with great focus.
Starter Jenrry Mejia pitched five innings and received only four hits. He pitched with full force and did not receive any run. Striking-out four, Mejia remained consistent on his 4.91 ERA.
Relief pitcher Manny Acosta pitched one inning and did not receive any run or hit on his 6.80 ERA.
On the other hand, Pirates' pitchers and batters did not play well and lost the game with bitter disgrace.
"You got to look at Ike Davis and say, `OK, he's legit, You can write off the first half ... for whatever it was. The package is there," Mets' manager Terry Collins said.
Kyle McPherson pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs and four hits along with a homer. He pitched way-ward and could not save the game for his team.
