Pittsburgh Pirates humiliated by Chicago Cubs 4-14 at Wrigley Field – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates were annihilated by the Chicago Cubs 4-14 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Monday, July 30 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Cubs absolutely dominated their opponents in a game that proved to be completely one sided. Starlin Castro doubled to deep left in the first inning to provide the Cubs with an excellent start. Second baseman Darwin Barney homered to left-centre in the
fourth to extend Cubs’ lead to 4-2.
"Definitely was probably the best ball I've hit since I've been at the big league level," Barney said in a post game interview. "It was just one of those things that he had such a good curveball today, he threw a slide-step fastball and was kind of anticipating
a fastball there."
Cubs’ offence looked in terrific form as they scored nine runs in the fifth inning to establish complete control over the contest. Anthony Rizzo homered to right and Barney singled to right. Castro also connected for a two run shot in the fifth to take Cubs’
lead beyond Pittsburgh reach at 13-2.
For the Pirates, Starling Marte singled to left in the third and Michael McKenry drove in two runs but their effort was never going to be enough.
Pirates’ starting pitcher Erik Bedard paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he gave up nine runs and seven hits in just over four innings to take his fifth loss of the season. Relief pitcher Chris Resop also suffered as he went for four
runs in just 0.2 inning.
Cubs’ starter Justin Germano, on the other hand, was quite outstanding as he pitched five effective innings for his first win of the season.
"I've never really been a part of anything like that," Germano said. "There's a lot of things a lot of things I can take from this game. It was a fun night."
Pirates, who are placed second on the National League Central Division standings, will be looking to make a strong come back in Game 2 to keep their post season hopes alive.
