Pittsburgh Pirates lose to Colorado Rockies 4-5 – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the struggling Colorado Rockies 4-5 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on Monday, July 16 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Jeff Karstens put the Pirates on the board with an RBI single to right in the fifth inning but the Rockies were also prepared for a fight back. Converting every possible scoring opportunity, they scored four runs in the fifth to keep the Pirates on the back-foot.
Pirates’ third baseman Pedro Alvarez connected for a three run shot in the ninth to add spice to the proceedings but a confident swing from Dexter Fowler in the bottom of the inning took the Rockies home.
"I knew he was going to throw me a lot of sliders, but I was waiting on a fastball and he threw me one," Fowler said.
"It's just tough because you've got to sit down for so long and resume play like nothing happened," Alvarez said. "You've got the adrenaline going before the rain delay and you just get kind of stagnant."
"A guy like that, you've got to try not to do too much and try to work with what he gives you," Alvarez said. "I was just trying to go up there and try to get on base."
After giving some impressive results in first half of the season, it seems the Pirates are losing their way a bit. It was Pirates’ second straight defeat and it will be extremely important for them to regroup and fight back in Game 2.
Manager Clint Hurdle will be disappointed with what he saw from some of the key Pirates’ players on Monday night.
There is no denying the fact he has played a prominent role in the revival of his team this season but the real challenge lies ahead as the Pirates look to end the season in a same fashion as they started.
Right now, Pittsburgh is placed second on the National League Central Division and it will be interesting to see if they can snap their losing streak in the next game to build on some much needed confidence.
