Pittsburgh Pirates outrival the Milwaukee Brewers with 6-4 win – MLB News
The Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, July 14, beat the Milwaukee Brewers by 6-4 at Miller Park to draw the three-game series. The Brewers which had won the first game 10-7 could not hold their lead in the series as the Pirates outperformed them both defensively and offensively.
But above all, it was Andrew McCutchen, the All-Star who turned the tides against the Brewers to steal the show. Two-runs short of his fourth homer in the last three-game series, McCutchen’s hit on Saturday brought about the fascinating win.
"Andrew's playing the game at a very high caliber right now on both sides of the ball," the Pittsburgh Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's in a very comfortable place."
With his 4-for-1, McCutchen had two RBIs to bestow victory over the Pirates as the Milwaukee Brewers' pitchers stood clueless.
"He makes those plays look easy," Hurdle said. "But, it's a good first step. It's an exact read when the ball is off the bat. It's a direct line to the ball and a slide."
Kevin Correia of the Pirates might not have been effective with his six inning spell wherein he gave up four runs and as many hits. But the offence did the job expected and required of them in Saturday’s encounter.
That was something that Hurdle admitted himself.
"Offensively, the big swing of the bat (tonight)," Hurdle said. "It's been fun to watch. The numbers up there, they really get your attention. The numbers he's been putting up since May, then you look at June, you look at July and keep moving forward."
Marco Estrada of the Brewers gave up three runs in his 5.2 inning spell, Kameron Loe proved particularly costly as he allowed two runs and as many hits in his 0.2 inning spell.
Jason Grilli, Chris Resop allowed a hit each in their one inning spell respectively, while Joel Hanrahan pitched a shut-out ninth inning to end the game with 6-4 win for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Both the teams will have an opportunity to win the series in Sunday’s game. As to which team prevails, team-work will determine that.
