Pittsburgh Pirates sneak past Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 – MLB Recap
Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 in the third game of their three-match regular series encounter on Sunday, May 26 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
“We are getting a little bit better,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “We did some good things today, and we probably complicated the game for ourselves a couple different times as well. But we were able to play through it. We got on top and we stayed
on top. It was a good way to finish the series and to win the series.”
Pirates starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez played wonderfully and played a key role in his team’s win. He tossed five solid innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He allowed three earned runs on 3.58 ERA.
The Pirates starter struck out four and remained consistent on the mound during his spell. Later Pirates manager unleashed reliever Vin Mazzaro from the bullpen who also pitched tremendously and allowed no run on 2.25 ERA.
“It wasn't his best stuff, The only easy inning he had was the first. We had a chance to get out of the fifth inning with him not giving up any runs, but that didn't happen,” Hurdle said.
Along with pitchers, the Pirates batters also played wonderfully and helped their team tackle Brewers offensive ball play.
Left fielder Starling Marte scored one run on two hits. He ran for one RBI on four at bats while he remained consistent on his slugging percentage of .462.
Centre fielder Andrew McCutchen also played well on his five at bats. He contributed one run on two hits while he managed to maintain his slugging percentage at .486.
Third baseman Pedro Alvarez ran for two RBIs on his four at bats. He hit hard with an OBP of .261. Along with Pedro, catcher Michael McKenry also played his role in Pirates’ great win. He scored two runs and maintained his slugging percentage of .475.
The Brewers’ batters and pitchers however, did not stop the Pirates consistent hammering and lost bitterly in the end.
Especially Yovani Gallardo certainly lost the game for the Brewers. He allowed four runs and four earned runs in his just four innings’ spell. Though he struck out seven Pirates’ batters but his ERA rose to blistering high at 4.79.
