Pittsburgh Pirates surpass Chicago Cubs 7-6 – MLB Recap
Pittsburgh Pirates surpassed the Chicago Cubs 7-6 in the second game of their four-match regular series encounter on Saturday, September 15 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Pirates played aggressive and won in style. On the whole, it was a well fought win for the Pirates but the Cubs also showed some resilience early in the game.
Cubs' senior players performed well but their pitchers’ poor performance damaged their chances of dominating the Pirates.
Jason Berken started the game for the Cubs but he allowed six runs and eight hits on his four innings. He struck-out two while he received a homer as well on his 4.50 ERA.
Later, two Cubs’ relief pitchers Rafael Dolis Jeff Beliveau did well on the mound but they still could not manage to avoid defeat.
Cubs’ closer Alberto Cabrera pitched two innings and allowed one run and one hit on his blistering 6.46 ERA. He struck-out two and received one homer which eventually proved disastrous for the Cubs.
On the other hand, the Pirates’ batters and pitchers played extremely well and earned a great victory.
"If it was about everybody's comfort, you'd choose to do it differently, But usually when you push through something like we're going through right now, it's gonna take some drama, and it's gonna take some wherewithal, and some confidence and some grit. It was enough today to get us out of the direction we were headed in and headed in a new direction," said Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle.
Wandy Rodriguez did well on the mound and showed his class. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs and nine hits. He struck-out four and remained consistent with his 3.65 ERA.
“It's obviously not how we write it up, especially with a seven-game losing streak, you want to go out there and have it go smooth, Being here in Chicago, dinner isn't good until about 6 o'clock anyway," Joel Hanrahan said.
Relief pitcher Tony Watson pitched 0.2 innings and did not allow any run or hit on his consistent 3.61 ERA.
Closer Jason Grilli also performed well and allowed just one run and two hits on his one inning spell.
