Pittsburgh Pirates triumph over Chicago Cubs 4-2 - MLB Update
The Pittsburgh Pirates took a brilliant 4-2 victory over the already struggling Chicago Cubs to take the lead in the three game series at Wrigley Field on May 27.
It was not just one aspect of the team that struggled in front of the Pirates, the whole Cubs’ line-up was not functioning and it was evident in their careless pitching, disorganised fielding and ridiculous batting. They are now resting in the fifth position
of the National League Central behind the Pirates.
The Pirates have managed to win 15 out of the last 21 games they have played against the Cubs since September of 2009. They clearly had the upper hand this time around as well. No one could imagine that the Cubs who were playing against the Pirates were
the same who had defeated the New York Mets and their 9-3 victory over them. Their offensive struggles were the biggest contributing factor to the loss, the fielding and pitching not far behind.
From the Pirates side, Kevin Correia bagged his seventh win since the season began as he stands tied with Jon Lester for the lead in Major League Baseball wins. Correia pitched seven and one third powerful innings in which he only sacrificed four hits as
he completed his sixth road game win, a National League high.
A modest Correia expressed his opinion as he said, “You throw half your games on the road your whole career, so it really doesn’t affect me at all, every place is a little different.”
Things did not go too well for his counterpart Doug Davis who let four runs pass him by in the duration of four and two thirds innings, which was a heavy contributor in the Cubs embarrassing defeat. On the day of his 300th career game, one would
expect Davis to perform wonderfully but instead he sacrificed two unearned runs and numerous errors in the second inning that led to the runs being scored.
The Pirates scored twice in the second inning and twice in the fourth. The first two runs came courtesy of Chris Snyder and Lyle Overbay who scored off Kevin Correia and Steve Pearce, respectively. The fourth inning saw Ronny Cedeno score after Andrew McCutchen
walked. The last run from Pittsburgh’s side came as Neil Walker reached the third base and Jose Tabata scored.
The only runs that the Cubs could manage to put on the scoreboard came in the ninth inning as Alfonso Soriano belted out a home run that covered a distance of 383 feet and Carlos Pena scored.
