Pittsburgh Pirates trounce Washington Nationals 5-1 – MLB news
Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals 5-1 in the second game of their four-match regular series encounter on 23 July at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
The Pirates played as one unit and rattled the Nationals’ big time. They played well during the entire game and won with style. They did not show any loop holes and hammered the Nationals with big force.
“He was just aggressive. Doing a good job locating his fastball. Mixing his off-speed pitches, But, I mean, he's got that overpowering stuff. When he doesn't give too many free passes and he's able to throw strikes in good locations, he's a tough at-bat,”
Martin said after the game and explained about his team’s performance.
Pirates’ batters and pitchers played wonderfully and helped their team win an important game of the series. Especially their batters proved one of the winning factors for the Pirates.
“(The) hitters he did get behind, because he got behind six or seven hitters, he got them out, He was able to pitch with good stuff tonight and that's why he got through seven in such an efficient manner,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
Third baseman Pedro Alvarez scored two runs on two hits. He played well on the plate and ran for single RBI. He batted four times and managed to maintain his slugging percentage at .502.
“Really, the thing about us right now is we're a little snake bit,” Washington's Jayson Werth said.
Catcher Russell Martin also did well on the plate as he scored two runs on three hits. He played well on his four at bats and hit hard against the Nationals’ entire pitching lineup. He proved his valour and managed to maintain his .407 slugging percentage.
Along with batters, the Pirates pitchers also played very well and proved too good for the Nationals entire batting lineup.
They all pitched in right areas and helped their team win an important game of the series against the Nationals. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings and allowed one run on two hits. He allowed one earned run along with a homer but his ERA
remained consistent at 3.51.
