Pittsburgh Steelers OC Todd Haley updates playbook as QB Big Ben uses Bruce Arians’ rule – NFL News
The Pittsburgh Steelers said they have updated their playbook by adding some missing signals which required quarterback Ben Roethlisberger use a hand signal from book of former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and was missed by the present coordinator
Todd Haley, much to the surprise of everyone.
Later, Ben explained that he was unaware of such signal's presence in the playbook of Todd, and it has now been included after his discussion with the coordinator.
He said:
"I know there are some people out there that were saying that I'm resistant to Todd. It's one of those things, we went to Todd and it's in the playbook now."
Todd who has replaced Bruce who was forced to announce retirement in a controversial manner earlier this year has introduced new offensive scheme and Big Ben has not been happy about the way Arians’ exit was handled by the team.
Ben is not on good terms with Todd since his arrival in Pittsburgh but has performed well in the coordinator’s offence arrangement. However, in the last game when the QB refreshed the legacy of Bruce by using the hand signal, it was assumed that Todd would
go furious on the offence leader but he was not moved at all.
Although a shocker, it was probably wise step from the coach at a time when he knows things are not thriving on good terms as far as his relationship with Ben is concerned.
Haley says of the situation:
"He knows when he's hearing my voice in his headset and giving him a call that I'm putting him in the best position for him to succeed. I have to trust him that when I make the call, he's going to make it work. At this point, it's been really good, and I
expect it to continue."
Now the Steelers have updated the playbook and included some of the missing signals, probably expecting that such situation does not arise again when offensive line has to return to the former coach's playbook for help.
