Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler decides against moving to Indianapolis Colts – NFL News
A day after reports emerged indicating that Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebackers coach, Keith Butler, was being pursued by the Indianapolis Colts for the defence coaching role, he said that he will not move elsewhere.
As of the latest, Steelers’ management has offered him a new contract and the coach, who was earlier reported to be interested in defensive coaching duties, has agreed to accept it.
Butler’s contract was due to expire later this year and he had expressed his interest to pursue an opportunity as a defensive staff at any other team around the National Football League (NFL).
The Indianapolis Colts, who have recently sacked eight assistant coaches, including their defensive co-ordinator, has shown an interest in the hiring of Butler.
He was due to be interviewed by them later this week.
With the reports of him reaching a new deal with Steelers, his defensive coaching dream remains unrealised.
Butler was the latest official reported to have been weighing to leave Steelers following the controversial announcement of retirement by their offensive co-ordinator, Bruce Arians.
Arians, in his statement a couple of weeks ago, said to have opted for retirement from his coaching career.
Some sections of media later labelled the decision being controversial one, claiming that the decision to call it quits was made by someone other than Arians himself.
The reports pointing out at the controversy were proved to be credible by Arians move to the Indianapolis Colts as an offensive co-ordinator.
Butler was expected to follow his former colleague but as of the latest confirmation by Steelers he has already decided against it.
Pittsburgh Steelers are in the meantime searching a new offensive coach to take over the place of Bruce Arians.
With a couple of candidates on top of their search, former Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach, Todd Haley, has been tipped to be leading the prospects.
It is expected that the team is going to make public their decision about him if he successfully goes through the interview phase.
Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin, was reported to have been making inquiries about Haley and a meeting is expected between them in the near future. The coach is leading Steelers hunt for the new offensive coach.
Haley had recently been linked to talks with Arizona Cardinals for a similar position. There is no confirmation if has gone through the process.
This is the only appointment of the season that the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to make to fill in the spot that has become vacant since departure of Bruce Arians.
It has been a story of all well with them, otherwise, with no hustle bustle of hiring firing. The team has finished the 2011 NFL regular season as the second best on the American Football Conference (AFC) North division, ending their run with the loss of
the wild card game against Denver Broncos.
